Wouldn't you know.

The Feminine Critique

It turns out that the right answer to the question "How do women gain professional respect at work?" is...well, every possible answer is wrong. We can choose between being perceived as less competent than men, or too tough as women. We lose stature by getting angry, while men gain stature by doing so.

So, would you rather be respected, or liked? Since we apparently only get to choose one...

i think you can choose to be both respected and liked.

don't agree that you have to choose.

mind you, i think i work for a company with a stellar track record in this area...

so, i'm biased. i don't think my work environment is representative. but, maybe that's why i'm interested in the dialogue too.

thanks for sharing

I just read that article after it was sent out on a earth science women's network mailing list. The depressing part was how many women on the list agreed with the sentiment - if only we could all work places like Bolder does! Of course these were all women in academia, so I am curious if the problem is better or worse there...
